Growl... growl... growl...
The sound was low, almost gentle, but each note curled like a warning across the back of Steve's neck.
The dire wolf hadn't moved much. It just stood there, hulking and massive, its red eyes boring into him, its limbs trembling as though every fiber of its being wanted to pounce.
Saliva dripped in slow threads from its yellowed fangs, stretching to the leaves beneath it before snapping loose.
Steve stood paralyzed, locked in place by the raw, suffocating weight of fear. He couldn't even blink. All his body could do at that moment, was absolutely nothing.
'What the hell is that?'
He'd seen wolves. In movies and all sorts. But this... this thing? This wasn't a wolf. It was death in a fur coat. A monster dredged up from the deepest pit of some godless hell.
Steve's breath came in ragged little gasps, shallow and fast. His mind was spinning, flipping between frantic thoughts like a broken slot machine.
'No, no, no. This isn't right. Why now? Why the hell me? I had a good thing going! I was going to make it. I was gonna be the harem king! I was going to become the strongest!
I'm the main character... right?'
He took a step back. Then another. His hands trembled as he edged away, inch by inch, eyes locked on the creature before him.
