Chapter 913: Volume 29: The Distant Pointing of Sword Qi, - 7: Entanglement
As soon as Komer boarded the ship sailing from Lake Nissai to Bruce Fortress, he fell into deep thought. The sudden appearance of Katya gave him an uneasy premonition; he felt he had been too neglectful of his allies’ feelings.
In fact, Komer was aware that the relationship between himself and his allies was superficial at best. Whether it was Katya or Hoffman, their value to him was diminishing, and their interests were increasingly diverging from his own intentions. It was not surprising, as he had never really intended for either Katya or Hoffman to ascend to the throne of the Kingdom of Nicosia. To be precise, maintaining a situation where Katya and Hoffman were mutually hostile and restraining each other suited his interests best, but clearly, this situation could not last forever.
The relationship between his side and both of theirs had evolved from mutual use to mutual perfunctory treatment. Katya and Hoffman were no fools; they too had noticed this shift. Their attitudes were subtly changing, realizing that they could never be true collaborators with him, perhaps leading them to other ideas. Yet, facing his dominance, they couldn’t harbour any other ulterior motives, but now, what about now?
Komer looked at the calm water surface, thoughtfully stroking his chin. Katya and Hoffman definitely wouldn’t be pleased to see his power continuously expanding, but now it seemed they were unable to stop his progression. Whether it was Galle or Silesia, those were not areas they could interfere in. Zellin and Nissa’s fear of the Romanov family was no less than their fear of him. Without the support of Katya and Hoffman, he was at most a bit passive in public opinion. But with a strength that far exceeded the others, how effective did they think public opinion could be? At most, it would only make his future appeasement efforts somewhat difficult.
However, it was necessary to prevent trouble before it happened. Over time, both he and Maha Gummi had somewhat neglected paying attention to Katya and Hoffman. Katya’s arrival seemed to wake him up, reminding him that even minor characters could sometimes stir up big trouble.
Komer had not yet fully realized the impending crisis. He was too arrogant. The long-standing smooth sailing had made him somewhat complacent; in his view, once the beastmen had been successfully drawn in by him, no one could change the overall situation.
After Komer returned to Bruce, those he considered minor characters did not, as he had imagined, contentedly wait for fate to unfold. Stirring up trouble seemed to be an inherent responsibility assigned to minor characters.
As soon as Katya left Livonia, she went directly to Godeburg. This was her first visit to Godeburg since the beastmen had occupied Jazair, a city that was a stronghold of Hoffman and did not welcome her. But at such a time, it seemed all could be set aside.
