Chapter 890: Volume 28: The Long Spear Tills the Courtyard, - 7: Balance
The beastmen unexpectedly took no action, which greatly surprised Komer. In his view, such an opportunity was an irresistible temptation for the beastmen, yet they had actually declined the bait. This frustrated Komer’s original plan to use the beastmen’s invasion of Silesia as a chance to take over Rundbell and the Kechin area in one fell swoop. While desires are beautiful, reality is often disappointing. Although Komer was confident that his current army could easily crush the Silesians, the Galleians were still loitering on the border, the Church of Light had issued its sternest condemnation and warning, and with the beastmen’s inscrutable intentions, Komer had no choice but to be cautious.
"These beastmen seems not as simple as we imagined. They actually declined our invitation. How could they show no interest in such a fertile stretch of land as Silesia?" Komer couldn’t figure it out, as in his view, the inherently greedy beastmen should find it impossible to resist such a temptation.
"Lord Komer, didn’t you once suggest that the beastmen might have some connection with the Church of Light? The renewed threats and blackmail from the Church of Light, along with the special relationship between the Silesians and the Church of Light as well as the bizarre loss of Saint Nicholas Fortress in the last war—could there be some link among the three?" Rebry casually remarked while examining the lord’s mansion. The Heine family had quite the appreciation level: the rich Baroque style blended perfectly with Byzantine flavors, making the lord’s mansion appear like a magnificent cluster of palaces. "The Heine family’s dedication to these buildings is truly lamentable. It would be terribly unfortunate for one to lose all of this."
"It’s a pity that everything that should have remained here was moved onto ships by that Ebson guy. What a spoil-sport brute he is. Does he not understand that many things lose their value once removed from here? Look at these ornaments on the walls; he even removed those. That’s just too excessive!" Puber complained indignantly. "Komer, you’re too indulgent with Ebson; his behavior has completely exceeded what a loser deserves."
"Is that so? I don’t think so. All I know is that his behavior made it very easy for us to get a footing here. Without his cooperation, we may have faced many unforeseen troubles. I believe his contribution is worth our expenditure," Komer disagreed.
"Hmph, you’re always so extravagant. At this rate, no matter how much wealth you have, you’ll squander it all." Puber was very dissatisfied with some of Komer’s actions, but each time, Komer would justify it with strategic needs, leaving Puber with no room to interject, only able to grumble privately.
