Chapter 727: Volume 21: The Dark Road - 9: Barbarian Alliance_3
"Montrey, what are you saying?" A fierce and domineering voice came from his right, making the man with the triangular eyes and short, drooping eyebrows look indescribably strange on his round face. The flesh on his cheeks trembled slightly as he spoke, and his sharp and cunning gaze wandered over the face of the Caron Tribe leader. "Gdansk Fortress was taken by us all; although it borders the land of the Mortals of Iberia and your Caron Tribe, over these years we haven’t seen your Caron tribe take it by yourselves. Now you want to return it to the Mortals to rebuild with just a word, what gives you the right to decide for everyone?"
The anger surged upwards, and Montrey’s furious gaze met the other’s without submission. The wooden bowl in his hand crumbled into sawdust under the pressure of his enormous palm. He was about to rise and retort when the person beside him pressed him back down.
"Commander Hulechi, Montrey was merely making a suggestion; he did not unilaterally agree to anything. Aren’t we discussing this issue right now? We Mountain people have always been united. Such words might damage the harmony. Now, all of us, the Ten Great Tribe Leaders, are here. If there are any objections, they can be spoken frankly, but we must not use language that undermines the unity of our Mountain people."
The middle-aged man who pressed down Montrey could be considered an oddity among the Mountain people. He was much leaner in height and build than the other Mountain tribe leaders, although he was still a strong man compared to the Mortals. However, in the tent, he seemed somewhat frail, but no one dared underestimate him in the slightest, for he was Carter Tribe Leader Wuli from the Yonka Tribe, second only to the Carlo Tribe.
"Leader Wuli, perhaps my tone was a bit excessive. I ask for Montrey’s forgiveness, but unclear speech does not enlighten, unargued reasoning does not clarify. Gdansk Fortress is the strategic point for entering Flanders Valley. We are all from a military background; we understand this better than anyone. How many of our brave Mountain warriors died attacking Gdansk Fortress? If it wasn’t for silently infiltrating through other passes and launching surprise attacks, how could we have taken the fortress? To now hand it back to the Mortals for nothing, does it mean our Mountain people’s blood was shed in vain?" Feeling pressured by the other’s imposing manner, the burly man with triangular eyes gave a contemptuous snort and argued back.
"What do you mean ’hand it back for nothing’? Hulechi, did you not hear what I said? Komer is willing to offer some conveniences in exchange for this condition. Do you think we’re all fools and you’re the only smart one?" Unable to restrain himself any longer, Montrey stood up angrily with a huff and retorted.
