Chapter 1597: Seeing Her True Colors Clearly
Du Tian’s footsteps paused for a moment as he stood at the door, silently watching the Du Family Factory Director who seemed to have aged ten years.
The once straight back was now hunched over.
A face full of defeat and despair.
He had trusted Lih Shuyi so wholeheartedly, without a trace of doubt, who would have thought that she would deliver such a crushing blow to him.
But perhaps it was for the best; otherwise, his father might not have even known how he died.
He didn’t believe that Lih Shuyi truly loved his father.
It was merely his power she was after.
Only his naive father would take it seriously.
Standing at the doorway, Du Tian began to ponder carefully; right now, nothing must happen to his father.
He almost overlooked his father’s health.
Thinking of this, Du Tian turned back into the living room.
This suffocating place was somewhere he didn’t want to stay for a moment, but some things had to be done.
Striding across the room, he approached Director Du, who was sitting on the sofa with his head in his hands, and said softly, "Dad, maybe you should go to the hospital. You don’t look well."
Director Du slowly lifted his head, looking at his eldest son. In the past, he always thought his son’s temper was bad and that they weren’t close, also considering him a failure compared to his increasingly outstanding second son, leading him to gradually give up on him.
Originally, he had intended to groom him as his successor.
At this moment, the usually authoritative Director Du saw the anxiety and concern on his son’s face; a wave of shame and guilt flooded over him. He moved his lips and shook his head, saying, "I’m fine, you don’t need to worry."
With that, he stood up, looked at the mother and daughter duo holding each other, and firmly instructed the nervous maid standing at the kitchen door, "Take Mingzhu back to her room."
Then he looked at Mingzhu and kindly said, "Mingzhu, go back to your room for now. Daddy and Mommy need to talk about something."
Assuming he wasn’t mistaken, the police would knock on their door tonight; he never believed that Lih Shufang would take the fall for her second sister.
Besides, this could lead to a prison sentence, even if Lih Shufang wanted to shoulder the blame, her husband wouldn’t agree.
The maid came over hesitantly, blinking as if she understood something; she had been questioned for half the morning earlier, which had scared her, swearing repeatedly that she hadn’t taken Du Tian’s mother’s jewelry.
It’s said that a clean conscience fears no accusations, but faced with such stern police officers, one naturally feels a creeping dread.
Thankfully she had nothing to hide, not touching even a thread of the family’s belongings. Though uneducated, she possessed basic decency and integrity.
However, she never expected that the elegant, high-status lady of the house was the real thief.
This was truly a case of guarding against all foreign intrusions but unable to guard against internal threats.
Yet the male owner always listened to the lady of the house, and in the family, Lih Shuyi held the final say, so things should be alright. A beautiful woman shedding a few tears probably would resolve everything.
Poor Xiao Tian, though.
He just had to swallow this grievance.
These matters didn’t concern her; a maid had no say, but thankfully her suspicions had finally been cleared.
Given the situation, it wasn’t suitable for a child to be present; since the master of the house had spoken, she quickly came over and led the sobbing Du Mingzhu back to her own room.
Now, the spacious living room was left with only Director Du, his son Du Tian, and Lih Shuyi.
Lih Shuyi stopped crying and just gave Director Du a pitiful look, seemingly resolved about something suddenly. Unfortunately, before she could make another scene, the phone in the living room rang.
Du Tian glanced at Director Du, who waved his hand, his voice hoarse, "You answer it."
Du Tian picked up the phone.
Before he could speak, the frantic screech of an old woman blasted through the line, loud enough to be heard without speakerphone, but knowing who it was, Du Tian pressed the speakerphone button anyway.
"...Lih Shuyi, you fool, stealing from the dead and getting your brother into trouble—I’m telling you, before tonight, you must have him released..."
Lih Shuyi was stunned for a moment, suddenly charging over like a madwoman; Du Tian sidestepped quickly, it’s better to keep a distance from the crazed.
Lih Shuyi didn’t bother to refute anything; she simply cut the call with a click.
Suddenly her expression turned fierce, and she pulled the phone cord out.
Having witnessed the whole scene, Director Du stood at the brink of collapse, his heart turned utterly cold.
But what about Lih Tianci?
He looked at Du Tian.
"Dad, Lih Tianci is currently suspected of kidnapping, with many charges against him. Do you still want to try to save him?" Before Director Du could voice his opinion, Du Tian continued, "Oh, and I heard that one of Lih Tianci’s uncles even went to the scene to snatch him and used your name to threaten the police, but in the end, he went in with them..."
What?
There was actually such a thing?
He looked at Lih Shuyi, finally gritting his teeth, and said, "Lih Shuyi, your Lih Family sure has some nerve."
Despite his carefulness, behaving as if walking on thin ice, the Lih Family dared to exploit his name for wrongdoing—did they think his death wasn’t imminent enough?
After receiving such a blow, Director Du calmed down quickly instead.
He walked to the telephone, shoving Lih Shuyi aside; she looked in disbelief at Director Du’s darkened face, realizing that he now judged her poorly. But things couldn’t carry on like this; if Old Du also became weary of her, she’d be finished.
She staggered a few steps backward, caught off guard by Director Du’s push, before collapsing to the floor with a wail, feigning unconsciousness.
Du Tian rolled his eyes.
The fainting incident was perfectly timed.
But everything that needed saying and doing was complete, and the ensuing drama had little to do with him. He still had to look into whether the other jewelry pieces were retrieved, so he wasn’t interested in watching the Du Family’s farce. Helping out by fixing the phone cord, he glanced at his father, who seemed fine, fully capable of enduring the blow, and then said, "Dad, I have to go now. If you need anything, call me." With that, he scribbled his mobile number on a piece of paper and handed it to Director Du. "When dialing, add the area code first, otherwise it won’t connect..."
Director Du took the paper, silently stashing it in his pocket, looking at his son; thousands of words boiled down to a sigh.
Du Tian’s eyes darkened slightly; he smirked indifferently, turning around and striding out the door.
While Lih Shuyi lay "unconscious" on the floor, she was ignored for the first time.
Director Du didn’t even glance at her but instead made three consecutive phone calls.
