Chapter 28
Danny stood outside the grand gates of Paulina's mansion, the imposing metal structure gleaming under the soft glow of the evening lights. Two guards flanked the entrance, their stances firm and professional. The grandeur of the estate was evident even from the outside, with a sprawling garden and a lavish fountain visible through the bars of the gate.
He cleared his throat, mustering confidence. "Yes, how can we help you, young man?" one of the guards asked, his tone neutral but observant.
Danny gave a polite nod. "I'm a friend of Paulina. Could you let her know that Danny Fenton is here?"
The guard's eyes subtly scanned Danny from head to toe, his gaze lingering on the sleek, otherworldly motorcycle beside him. A thought crossed his mind: 'He's got the look, the confidence, and the kind of aura that would definitely catch Miss Paulina's attention.'
This wasn't the first time the guards had seen their young miss entertain boys. They had learned to treat such situations with professionalism, though they occasionally exchanged amused glances. One of them picked up a radio and spoke into it, asking for permission to allow Danny inside.
Danny stood waiting, his heart pounding slightly. He was nervous, but his anticipation outweighed any hesitation. He knew Paulina found him attractive, and now that his biggest concern—the ghost car—was behind him, he felt it was the right time to pursue his first love.
But deep inside, there was more than romance fueling his visit. The recent string of deaths had shaken him, reminding him of how fragile life could be. What if something happened to the people I care about? The thought made his stomach twist. He wanted to be closer to them, to protect them. An absurd part of him even considered keeping them locked safely in a house where he could watch over them.
While Danny waited, another conversation unfolded inside the mansion.
The young master of the house, Paulina's older brother, had been informed of Danny's arrival. Sitting in his study, he adjusted his tie and gave a faint smile. "Let him in. And tell Paulina to come down and meet him," he instructed the butler standing by the door.
The young master was a man of refined tastes and a sharp mind. He understood the social landscape well, and he knew about the Fenton family's reputation. The Fentons were geniuses in their field, pioneers in ghost research. From the data he had gathered, he also knew they were driven by strong emotions, making them potentially valuable allies.
'If Paulina can foster a good relationship with this boy, I could leverage it. Their knowledge might prove useful in future projects.' To him, his sister was less a sibling and more a potential asset in the web of connections he was weaving.
