Chapter 21
Star stood outside the boys' locker room, hesitating. Her heart raced, and her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. She wasn't sure why she had followed him here. It felt impulsive, irrational even, but the past few days had thrown her into a state of confusion. Danny Fenton was no longer the boy she'd dismissed as ordinary. His transformation—both in demeanor and presence—was impossible to ignore.
Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open just enough to peek inside. The sound of running water echoed in the room, and there he was, his back to her, steam rising around him. She froze, unsure of what to do. Her mind screamed at her to leave, but her feet wouldn't move.
"Star?" His voice cut through the haze, calm but questioning.
She startled, the door creaking as she stepped inside. Danny turned, quickly wrapping a towel around his waist. His piercing blue eyes met hers, and for a moment, neither of them spoke.
"I—uh—didn't mean to interrupt," Star stammered, her cheeks flushing red. She glanced at the floor, suddenly feeling very out of place.
"Then why are you here?" Danny asked, his tone more curious than annoyed.
Star hesitated, forcing herself to meet his gaze. "I... couldn't ignore it anymore. You've changed, Danny. And I think—I think I needed to tell you that I've noticed." She paused, gathering her courage. "And that I like it. I like you."
The silence that followed was almost unbearable. Danny's expression shifted—surprise, amusement, and something softer all playing across his face. He leaned back slightly, crossing his arms.
"Well, that's unexpected," he said, his voice steady but with a hint of a smirk.
Star's cheeks burned hotter, but she stood her ground. "I know it's random, and I don't even fully understand it myself. But you've been on my mind ever since..." She trailed off, struggling to find the right words. "Since you saved me."
Danny's smirk faded, replaced by something more sincere. "That's what friends are for, Star. I couldn't just leave you in trouble."
