Chapter 100: Edge
[ Towards the northern cliffs where the land met the ocean ]
Kieran and Vera were headed straight towards the docks...but this part ...was too quiet.
Waves crashed with a violent rhythm somewhere in the distance while a strange frosty chill had settled on the adjacent land.
The stench of rancid and wasted oil...and salt filled Kieran’s nostrils.
Massive cranes loomed like giants overhead, creaking softly in the wind. Most looked like they hadn’t been in use for a long long time.
Rusted shipping containers lined the roads. They almost looked like gigantic tombstones. Why? Because the place seemed dead. Too still !
There was a faint hum of some machinery that echoed through the iron framework of the old gantries, but not a single worker was in sight.
The place did not just look deserted,it looked deliberately abandoned.
"This is it," Vera said softly, crouching low behind a stack of old tires. "This is where they said..." Her voice trailed off as Kieran stood up behind her, eyes scanning the shadows, senses sharpened to the point of pain.
His claws hadn’t fully retracted. "Tell me again," he said, voice low yet like thunder. "What could we find here that’s worth saving your ass?"
Vera didn’t turn around. "Answers! The missing girls...Because think about it...this place isn’t monitored like the rest. No patrols. No guards. Just cargo shipments and mercenaries."
