Chapter 28: The trash

Irritation surged through Zara. She squirmed in his hold, trying to push him away, but Nathaniel’s grip only tightened in response. It was like trying to fight iron. Eventually, her strength gave out, and she froze, locking eyes with him, her glare sharp enough to cut.

"Why do you care?" she spat. "Whether I’m alone or surrounded by friends, it shouldn’t matter to you. I’m doing just fine without you. Now let me go."

He didn’t flinch.

"Yeah," he said with a cold scoff, eyes flicking down to her bandaged leg. "I can really see how fine you are doing. Look at yourself. If you had stayed put and rested, you’d be halfway healed by now. But no, you had to play tough. Ride around on a bike with your friend, ignore the doctor’s advice. And now?" He glanced pointedly at her. "You can’t even stand without a support."

His words hit a nerve, slicing through her already raw emotions.

"You followed me?" she exclaimed with disbelief.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he scooped her up and placed her gently on the sofa. "Where is your room?" he asked, looking around.

She tried to sit up. "What are you doing now?" she asked, her tone defensive, suspicious.

"Are you going to tell me where your room is, or should I kick every door open until I find it?"

Zara shifted uncomfortably, trapped between rage and confusion. "That one," she muttered, pointing toward the guest room. "But why? What are you even trying to do?"

Without sparing her another glance, he turned and strode into the room.
