Passing by the storeroom next door, she happened to see the kids Xiao Linzi had rounded up grinding soy milk. At first glance, Lin Yuan hardly recognized them; it hadn’t been that long since she last saw them, but they seemed transformed—each one clean and lively, a far cry from the raggedy beggars they used to resemble.
These children were far more reliable than the women in the neighboring kitchen. Lin Yuan stood at the doorway for a while, yet they didn’t notice her presence. They kept on with their tasks, and although a couple of them made cheeky comments now and again, they did not gossip about others like a loudspeaker, nor did they utter any vulgarities.
Lin Yuan watched the children with a smile and felt genuinely pleased; this was the harmony and diligence she truly enjoyed seeing.
Xiao Linzi was still in charge of these kids, but after scanning the room, Lin Yuan did not see him anywhere in the storeroom. Puzzled, she then heard the sound of bickering from around the corner.
Lin Yuan thought it might be Loudspeaker, unwilling to leave and causing trouble for Shopkeeper Zhou. But listening more carefully, she recognized the arguing voice as her big sister, Lin Wei.
And the other voice belonged to Xiao Linzi, whom she had just been looking for.
