Chapter 1283 - 566: The Arrest
Squad One Office.
Luke and Blackie had just returned to the office when everyone gathered around.
The deputy squad leader asked, "Did Lennon Ochoa confess?"
Luke pulled a chair and sat down, "He admitted to being involved in planning the arson and kidnapping, but he denied being the mastermind, saying he was just an accomplice."
Jackson said, "The case initially had Lennon Ochoa contact Thomas Colley, and I think this guy counts as the real mastermind.
He's clearly downplaying his role."
The deputy squad leader said, "Determining the mastermind is not fixed; the person who plays an organizing and leading role in the whole case is usually identified as the main perpetrator. By that standard, Thomas Colley also qualifies.
Lennon Ochoa's lawyer will definitely argue over this.
So it's not easy to define; better leave this headache to the judge."
Jackson laughed, "So can we close the case now?"
Blackie glared at him, "Rookie, as a detective, you have to be thorough.
Lennon Ochoa only admitted to being involved in the arson and kidnapping but did not admit to hiring a gunman to attack Fred Kramer and the Captain."
Jackson analyzed, "I think it was him; he's denying it just because the hitman didn't point him out.
And we don't have enough evidence to prove it."
Initially, Luke also thought the gunman that night was hired by Lennon Ochoa, but after careful questioning, he found no signs of lying, making him rethink.
Luke reasoned through the case again and found that Lennon Ochoa indeed seemed to lack motivation; his goal was to short-sell Kerman Pharmaceutical Company's stock, and since the company's stock was already falling due to negative news, he had no reason to take the risk to hire someone to kill Fred Kramer.
"From the interrogation process, it seems Lennon Ochoa is not likely the one who hired the gunman; he also lacks sufficient motive."
The deputy squad leader said, "That means there's someone else trying to take advantage of the chaos to eliminate Fred Kramer. Who would that be?"
"The shooting case that night should be further investigated starting with the surviving driver." Luke scanned the crowd and instructed, "Get ready, everyone. Tomorrow morning, I will go to the hospital to talk with Ricardo Solu, the driver from the shooting case.
If he doesn't cooperate, we'll bring him back to the police station for interrogation."
"yes, sir."
...
Garrett Hospital.
At ten in the morning, Luke came again to Ricardo Solu's hospital room.
Ricardo Solu was lying on the hospital bed watching TV.
Blackie teased, "Wow, you're having quite a cozy life, even more relaxed than me."
Ricardo Solu glanced at Blackie and continued watching TV.
Blackie directly turned off the TV, "Listen, your good days are numbered.
Either you cooperate with the police investigation, or you come with us to the police station."
Ricardo Solu shook his head, "My gunshot wound hasn't healed; I'm not going anywhere."
Luke took out a photo of Lennon Ochoa, "Do you recognize him?"
Ricardo Solu looked at the photo and shook his head, "I don't know him."
Luke saw no signs of lying and advised, "You only drove the car that night during the shooting, you didn't fire the gun.
If you're willing to cooperate with the police, I can help you become a state witness; it's the best choice for you."
"I'm willing to cooperate with the police investigation."
"Then tell us, who's behind the shooting?"
Ricardo Solu sighed, "Sorry, as much as I'd like to tell you, I actually don't know."
Luke stared at his face and caught a glimpse of deception.
It was obvious that he was unwilling to cooperate with the police.
Luke said sternly, "Ricardo Solu, I formally notify you now that, given your condition has improved,
in ten minutes you'll be transferred to be held at the detective bureau."
Ricardo Solu's face changed slightly, "You can't do this, my gunshot wound hasn't fully healed yet."
Blackie laughed, "Buddy, no need to be shy, I'll take good care of you at the detective bureau."
Ricardo Solu shouted, "I need to see a doctor. My wound feels a little painful, I still need some examinations..."
"Stop making excuses. The doctor said all your test results are normal." Luke pointed at his watch, "You've got nine minutes left. Detective Marcus, help him pack his things."
"yes, sir."
Nine minutes later, Ricardo Solu was handcuffed and brought onto the police car.
There were a total of three police cars escorting, with Luke sitting in the first car leading the way.
Blackie was in the middle car escorting Ricardo Solu.
Jackson sat in the last police car.
Blackie hardly stopped talking along the way, chatting with Ricardo Solu, "Hey, buddy, take a good look at this bustling city, soon you won't be able to see it again.
Have you been in prison before?
I think you'll enjoy the life there.
I know you're hiding the case details from the police; there's still time to talk. If you become a state witness, your life will be much better..."
Blackie muttered the whole way, and Ricardo Solu rarely responded, turning his head to the side, lost in thought while gazing out the window.
Half an hour later, the car's speed slowed, and Blackie smiled, "Buddy, welcome to the detective bureau.
I believe you'll have a pleasant time here."
