On the morning of March 16th, Mo Yan drove to the city in her carriage, planning to pick up the various grilling tools that she had custom-made at the blacksmith’s two days earlier. Having secured the kites, Mo Yan got back on the carriage and urged Da HongZao forward.
At that moment, the street wasn’t very crowded, and as Da HongZao moved at a leisurely pace, Mo Yan took great interest in observing the small stalls on both sides of the street, hoping to find something interesting.
While looking, Mo Yan suddenly recognized the side profile of a man standing in front of a stall not too far ahead. Upon closer inspection, she identified him: Young Master Du—Liu Tinglan’s fiancé, Du Wencai!
This year, Du Wencai was twenty-one and, typically, men of his age should have already been married. However, the Du Family had two elderly people confined to bed, the men in the family were picky and proud, leaving only a few women to make ends meet by doing laundry and mending for others.
Despite being poor and bogged down by a mountain of debt, even having a Scholar in the family couldn’t change the fact that they all crammed into two run-down rooms without even a cloth curtain to divide them.
Yet, Du Wencai held himself in high regard, believing he was destined for great things. He looked down on girls from similarly impoverished families and aspired to marry into a family with status and power, hoping to rise rapidly and escape his dismal life of poverty and desperation.
