At first, the stiff soybean stalks were a bit uncomfortable on her feet, and the sharp pods could be painful if she wasn’t careful. But after stepping on them a few times, the soles of her feet began to warm up, and the stimulation made her want to continue.
The three siblings, along with a little tiger cub, played like this for quite some time, nearly crushing half of the pods. It was only when it was time for lunch that they reluctantly put their shoes back on.
In the afternoon, more than a dozen villagers began to beat the soybean stalks with tools, causing even more beans to burst out and fly everywhere.
After a session of beating, most of the pods had opened to release the beans. The rest, not fully dried, would not release their beans and needed more sun. They would continue to dry them tomorrow and beat them again then.
The villagers piled the stalks to one side and then drew the tarpaulin together in the middle, where the small yellow beans, mixed with broken leaves and empty husks, accumulated like little mountains.
When they had checked the direction of the wind, they took up wooden tools resembling shovels and stood at the side. With each shovelful, the beans mixed with leaves and husks were tossed high, and as the wind blew, the leaves and husks naturally separated and drifted away, leaving behind plump little yellow beans on the tarp.
