With an appropriate amount of Spirit Spring Water added, along with some honey, the mixture was thoroughly blended until it formed dough. She shaped the dough into a circular cake and placed it into the steamer. Not long after the water boiled, she could smell the sweet aroma of the chestnuts.
The scent of the chestnuts was rich and as the steam began to rise, Little Flower grew impatient, trotting over and drooling as she circled the steamer, making gurgling sounds in the pot and seeming almost desperate to lift the lid and peek inside.
After steaming a while longer with an extra piece of firewood, Mo Yan removed the remaining firewood, and once the chestnut cake in the steamer cooled, she took a knife and cut the entire cake into matchbox-sized pieces, filling several clean plates.
"Here you go, this whole plate is yours." She placed a plate in front of Little Flower, who was already drooling puddles.
With a ’woof’ of excitement, Little Flower pounced on the plate, and a fifth of the chestnut cake disappeared in one big bite.
Mo Yan smiled and tried a piece herself. Mmm, it was better than the chestnut cakes from pastry shops, not overly sweet, and the pure chestnut flavor was even richer.
