Tobi was curled in Rose’s arms, his little body limp from exhaustion. He had barely made a sound since they took off, just clutching onto her like a lifeline.
Zara was already moving, stepping out first, her long coat billowing as she adjusted her grip on her bag. She turned back, her sharp eyes scanning Rose up and down. "Come on, let’s get out of here before I lose my hearing from this thing."
Rose took a gentle breath and stepped down, careful not to jostle Tobi. Tobi barely reacted; his small hands only found themselves embracing her neck in his sleep.
Behind her, Rolan descended from the helicopter, his movements smooth and unbothered, his hands in his pockets like he hadn’t just walked out of a near-death experience. The man who had accompanied Zara followed last, his sharp eyes flicking between them before he turned toward the pilot—a silent exchange passing between them.
Another person approached, a mechanic or pilot dressed in black, taking over the aircraft. The moment the last of them stepped away, the helicopter was wheeled off, disappearing into the distance.
Rose didn’t look back. She just tightened her hold on Tobi and made her way toward the waiting car. Zara climbed in first, then Rose, carefully settling into the seat as Tobi curled up in her lap. His breathing was slow and peaceful, already lost to sleep.
Rolan slid in beside her without a word, and the man who came with Zara took the front seat. As soon as the door shut, the engine purred to life, and they pulled away from the airstrip.
For a moment, there was silence, only the soft hum of the car and Tobi’s gentle breaths against Rose’s collarbone. Then Zara turned to her, her sharp gaze narrowing.
"What the hell happened?" she demanded. "How did you even end up like this?"
Rose exhaled, shifting slightly to look at her. Her voice was flat, exhausted. "The car just... floated."
Zara blinked. "Floated?"
