A New Life in Fairy Tail

Chapter 521 - 521: I'm Not Helping With This!

"What exactly do you need my help with? Seeing you smile like that gives me a seriously bad feeling. You're not trying to screw me over, are you?"

Laxus eyed Noah with profound suspicion. Noah's overly smug, calculating grin practically screamed 'trap.'

"How could you say that? I have a highly legitimate, serious task that requires your specific expertise," Noah replied, instantly dropping the smirk and replacing it with a mask of perfect, professional innocence.

"Right. And how exactly am I 'helping'?" Laxus asked, scrutinizing Noah's face. Seeing no immediate signs of deceit, his curiosity won out.

"You'll see once we get to Tenrou Island," Noah deflected smoothly.

"Fine. Let me hand over the desk."

Laxus walked over to Mirajane, who was happily resting nearby, and asked her to take over the administrative duties for the afternoon. Mirajane cheerfully agreed, stepping behind the bar to manage the chaotic guild members who were still fiercely debating the airship modifications.

With the handover complete, Noah raised his right hand. In a flash of golden light, the two mages vanished from the bustling guildhall and materialized in the quiet, dense forest of Tenrou Island.

"Alright, we're here. What's the job?" Laxus asked, crossing his arms.

"We'll get to that in a second. First, how is everyone holding up back at the guild?" Noah asked, waving a hand dismissively. Between his intensive research on the Devil's Heart and dispatching Thought Projections to handle the high-profile Nominative Requests, his true body hadn't spent much time mingling in Magnolia.

"They're fine. Actually, they're more than fine. Aside from running missions to pay the bills, everyone has practically locked themselves in the training grounds. Their motivation is through the roof," Laxus reported. He himself had been spending every free minute pushing his lightning magic to its absolute limits.

"That's exactly what I wanted to hear," Noah smiled, nodding in satisfaction. The absolute terror of Acnologia had successfully ignited a fire under the entire guild.

"What about you? You haven't just been sitting on this island playing mad scientist, right? Don't neglect your own training," Laxus warned, his brow furrowing slightly.

"Don't worry about me. I'm keeping a very close eye on my own combat metrics," Noah chuckled. "In fact, ever since my direct confrontation with Acnologia, my baseline power has been skyrocketing, even without active physical training."

Noah clenched his right fist.

CRACK!

The sheer, localized kinetic pressure of his grip instantly crushed the air in his palm, generating a miniature sonic boom. A violent gale erupted from his fist, violently flapping their coats. Unclenching his hand, a sphere of pure, hyper-dense golden magic materialized in his palm, radiating a suffocatingly heavy atmospheric pressure that distorted the air around them.

Laxus's eyes narrowed as he stared at the golden sphere. "Your magical density is higher. Your total capacity and physical constitution... they've spiked again, haven't they?"

"They have," Noah confirmed, dispelling the magic.

Laxus couldn't hide his mild frustration. He was training like a maniac, yet Noah was casually growing stronger just by breathing. "You monster. You just keep pulling further ahead."

"You shouldn't be complaining. You and the others are doing the exact same thing. Haven't you noticed that your own growth rate has accelerated massively since we returned from the Celestial Spirit World?" Noah pointed out.

Laxus paused, realizing Noah was right. His recent training sessions had yielded inexplicably massive gains.

Noah raised a finger, breaking down his theory:

The Magic-Mind Connection: In Earthland, a mage's power is fundamentally tethered to their emotional and psychological state.

Shattering the Limiters: Facing Acnologia—the absolute pinnacle of despair and invincibility—and managing to survive had shattered their subconscious mental barriers.

The Physical Breakthrough: Noah admitted he used to subconsciously fear that Acnologia's physical invulnerability was an insurmountable gap. However, managing to carve a chunk of flesh off the Dragon King proved that the beast's baseline physical defense had a limit—a limit Noah was rapidly approaching.

"Once I realized that Acnologia's 400-year growth had likely plateaued, and that I could realistically match its physical strength in a few years, all my underlying anxiety vanished. With my mind completely clear, my magical container naturally expanded," Noah concluded with a confident smile.

Laxus let out a heavy sigh. "Makes sense. But it's still annoying that you're growing faster than me."

"It's just the natural order of things," Noah smirked. "By the way, you should probably maximize your training right now. The starlight purification ritual we underwent in the Celestial Spirit World left a lingering, passive buff on our bodies. Your physical conditioning and magical refinement will yield significantly higher results for the next few weeks."

Laxus's eyes lit up immediately. "Are you serious? I need to get back to the training grounds right now!"

He spun around to leave, but froze after taking exactly two steps.

He was on Tenrou Island. An isolated landmass hundreds of miles away from the mainland. And Noah still hadn't told him what the 'help' was.

Laxus turned back, his face darkening. "Alright, enough stalling. You dragged me out here for a reason. What is it? Hurry up so I can get back to training."

"It won't take long. I just need you to be my test subject," Noah said brightly.

He pointed at the dirt. The ground rumbled, and a perfectly flat, two-by-two-meter stone slab rose from the earth. Noah casually pulled two metallic, box-shaped magical devices from his spatial pocket and attached them to the center of the slab. He pressed a green rune on both boxes.

Hummmmm.

The stone slab vibrated gently, detached from the earth, and hovered perfectly still about thirty centimeters in the air.

Laxus stared at the hovering slab. His face drained of color, immediately replaced by a look of profound, venomous betrayal.

"You don't seriously expect me to stand on that."

"I do. That's exactly why you're here," Noah nodded enthusiastically.

"I'm not helping with this! I'm going home!" Laxus roared, immediately turning on his heel to storm off. Even if he had to carve a canoe out of a tree trunk and row himself back to Magnolia, he refused to stand on that floating torture device just so Noah could laugh at him!

Wait.

A canoe is a vehicle too.

Laxus stopped dead in his tracks. To get off this island without Noah's teleportation, he would have to take a boat. Noah had deliberately trapped him.

CRACKLE!

Golden lightning violently erupted from Laxus's body, the air sizzling with ozone as he spun back around, his eyes burning with absolute rage. "You set me up! You dragged me out here just to screw with me!"

"Calm down and let me finish!" Noah waved his hands, entirely unbothered by the deadly electrical aura.

Seeing Noah remain perfectly serious, Laxus gritted his teeth and forcefully reigned in the lightning, though he continued to glare daggers at the hovering rock.

"Look closely at the two devices," Noah instructed, pointing at the boxes. "One of them is a standard localized levitation drive. The other... is a highly complex, localized conceptual-enchantment matrix I've been developing."

Laxus cautiously stepped closer, his anger slowly giving way to curiosity. "A matrix for what?"

"To cure Dragon Slayer motion sickness," Noah smiled triumphantly. "If we're retrofitting Grimoire Heart's airship to be our primary guild transport, it's completely useless if our three heaviest hitters are paralyzed the moment they step aboard. This device is the prototype. I need a genuine Dragon Slayer to stand on it to calibrate the sensory-disruption frequencies before I scale it up for the airship."

How would you like Laxus's prototype test ride to unfold in the next chapter? Should the device work perfectly, or should there be some highly entertaining technical difficulties?
