Chapter 328: The World at the End (9)

Beyond the room where black liquid sloshed, they entered a dead-end room with no connecting doors.

Unlike the white walls in other areas of the building, this room had beige-colored walls.

In the corners of the square room, frames that seemed to have been originally on display were piled up haphazardly.

Instead, the walls of this room were covered with images of Hungry Ghost in all sorts of colors.

Red Hungry Ghost, Blue Hungry Ghost, Green Hungry Ghost, and so on, Hungry Ghost in various colors.

These pictures exaggerated the small differences between the Hungry Ghost like cartoons.

In this strange space, a uniformed Hungry Ghost holding a white orb in one hand turned to face the pink girl and the Blue Reaper.

[Finally, I can perform my last duty.]

The uniformed Hungry Ghost sent out telepathy in a voice that sounded somewhat anxious.

Its expression seemed to be trying to look as normal as possible, but the Hungry Ghost’s face was gradually contorting with nervousness.

“Duty? What’s that?”

The pink girl had an innocent expression, as if she hadn’t noticed the Hungry Ghost’s demeanor at all.

However, the Blue Reaper gripped its staff tightly with tension as the Hungry Ghost exuded an ominous atmosphere.

[My final duty. It is to show certain records to the humans who visit this place.]

[Would you like to see?]

“Yes. Show me.”

The uniformed Hungry Ghost then approached the blocked wall and tapped it in a unique rhythm.

Creeeeak.

With that, the entire massive wall began to open, revealing a hidden room.

Like the exhibition hall in the model academy, it was a room full of moving mirrors.

“There are lots of mirrors here too.”

The pink girl looked around as she followed the Hungry Ghost inside.

In those mirrors, many people with serious expressions were shouting, screaming, and talking.

[It’s already been two years since life stopped being born in the tower. What’s the cause?]

[Alchemy is not eternal. Neither is the tower. If only evolution fluid had been the same….]

[Seeds aren’t germinating in the fields. There’s plenty of light, nutrients, and water!]

[Still, I hope the students can eat abundantly….]

[The tower has lost its ability to sustain itself. We need to find a way from the outside.]

[It’s daytime. The sun is cursing us.]

[What went wrong? Are we no longer human?]

[Spider, devour the sun.]

[The tower is breaking down.]

[The spider is broken.]

[Why on earth?]

[We need to bring matter from outside, from a different space.]

[The experiment was successful. It’s just a small piece of metal, but success is success.]

[Gather all the alchemists in this tower. This tower made of steel will lead us to hope.]

The people in the mirrors were all talking at once in different voices, making it difficult to understand what they were saying.

But one thing was clear.

It was the desperate emotion of humans trying to survive.

The Blue Reaper tried to remember each face of the pitiful humans with a sad expression.

But the pink girl couldn’t distinguish the jumbled voices bursting from the mirrors like the Blue Reaper could.

She was just following behind the Hungry Ghost, step by step, with the murmuring sounds as background noise.

And the Hungry Ghost stood next to the mirror left at the very back of the room.

Inside the mirror, a video that looked like it was taken of this tower from afar was playing.

The beginning of that video showed a massive disc-shaped structure gradually collapsing and being compressed.

A chilling noise just to hear.

It was as if the enormous but precarious-looking ‘Tower of the End’ was screaming.

The upper part of the tower, which had been endlessly collapsing like that, was soon bundled up like a giant steel rod.

Flash.

Simultaneously, a flash that started from the top of the tower turned the screen white.

And as the flash subsided, what was revealed was the image of the tower cut in half, with the collapsed part gone.

[With showing you this mirror, my explanation ends. Do you have any questions?]

The uniformed Hungry Ghost said this while its hand holding the orb trembled slightly.

‘Strange. Something’s strange.’

The Blue Reaper felt the Hungry Ghost’s current atmosphere was ominous.

“It’s hard to understand the content of these mirrors, can you explain?”

[My duty ends with guiding humans to the mirrors.]

“Then, how many people are there above this level?”

The Hungry Ghost looked anxious, but also seemed to be expecting something.

The pink girl, not noticing this about the Hungry Ghost, asked what she was curious about.

[I don’t know information about other floors.]

The Hungry Ghost’s face was gradually wrinkling like the surface of a walnut.

The hand holding the orb began to tremble more finely.

“What are those long statues with long arms and no legs?”

[That’s an impossible statue. I don’t know much about it.]

The Hungry Ghost unconsciously opened and closed its mouth repeatedly.

As if eating something.

“What are all those Hungry Ghost corpses outside the building?”

[Hungry Ghost? Ah, you mean guardians like me. That’s an interesting expression.]

[Those are all Hungry Ghost that ate cores. I dealt with them all.]

[Dealing with Hungry Ghost that ate cores is also my ‘duty’.]

The pink girl didn’t notice, but muscles were bulging on the Hungry Ghost’s body.

“Who wrote those phrases in that room? And what’s that black liquid?”

The pink girl said this while pointing to the door behind.

[That’s about something whose name must never be spoken.]

Now the Hungry Ghost’s face was completely crumpled, transformed hideously like a walnut.

But the pink girl, perhaps because she didn’t have much memory of living with humans, didn’t sense anything strange and opened her mouth again.

“Lastly, what’s the ‘long-legged black Hungry Ghost’?”

The Blue Reaper, sensing the ominous atmosphere, patted its Attachment Human’s cheek repeatedly, but the pink girl had already spoken.

[That’s also impossible to answer.]

The Hungry Ghost, now with a face turned red, answered while starting to bring the orb in its hand to its mouth.

[As a final addition, there are no ‘black guardians’ in this tower.]

And with those words as the last, it swallowed the white orb.

[The duty is over.]

[Finally!]

Then the Hungry Ghost’s body began to twist and contort.

Crunch. Crunch.

It looked extremely painful, but the Hungry Ghost was emitting telepathy that seemed truly relieved.

[I really wanted to eat it.]

The Hungry Ghost said this while lifting its head and grinning widely.

Its mouth was filled with countless white teeth packed tightly.
