Chen’s father was in the study room, discussing ancient wisdom and current affairs with his old disciples, really fired up, when Yu Jingting and Suizi walked in.
"Grandpa, have you eaten?" Yu Jingting greeted warmly.
Seeing the two of them, his expression turned from one of pretentious bravado to mortification in a split second.
"Jing, Jingting, when did you get here?" Chen’s father stuttered.
"Just thought I’d swing by because I missed you. We’re practically family."
On hearing the words "practically family", Chen’s father’s vision blurred. Oh no, not them.
These two wretches were like harbingers of misfortune to him, always bringing trouble with their visits.
"I have guests over, maybe you two could——"
"Ah, so this is the extraordinary overseas scholar Grandmother always talks about. Good to meet you. Would you like a cigarette?" Jingting, acting like they were old friends, interrupted Chen’s father, walking up to a man sitting at the table and offering him a cigarette from his pocket.
