Knights Apocalyptica

Chapter 269: Special Show

Garin fiddled with his gun while Munchy nibbled on a roasted carrot on his knee. The smell of the searing meat made Erec’s stomach clench in hunger. Which was odd, since he’d thought the swelling anxiety meant he wasn’t eating at all tonight; he shuffled in the back seat of Enide’s car, getting a look at the sizzling roast. Fido howled as the pup stared at the meat, the stars above glittering on the glossy, fat-coated surface.

For the first time since the day began, Erec was, temporarily, thinking about something other than his friend’s dumb decision.

Garin coughed.

Erec winced, and his thoughts went from hunger back to the situation at hand.

“We’re three hundred miles out now,” Enide said, breaking the silence. "I was tracking the odometer. So hey, officially getting into the ‘pretty far’ territory.”

“When is far enough?” Garin asked.

Never would be best. Erec shivered and then sat up; it was time for the conversation then. His eyes lingered on his best friend, who spun the meat. For a second, Erec paused. If he’d been forced back into the Academy, watching Enide, Garin, and Colin head on an expedition, what would he have done? Could he really say with a straight face that he’d have accepted that answer from Boldwick? That he wouldn’t have been thrown into a rage and done something dumb?

No. He’d also have been reckless.

Garin stopped spinning the meat and looked at him, hopeful that Erec had all the answers.
