The Shen Residence’s grand entrance was continuously frequented by carriages, evidently all here for the plum-viewing gathering. However, whether it was the elder ladies or the young girls, they were all followed by one or two servants. Only Yang Ruxin strolled over by herself, which made her quite a unique presence.
Yang Ruxin paid no mind to the scrutiny of others and, after handing in her invitation, followed the servant guiding her into the Shen Residence.
"Are you also here to attend the plum-viewing gathering hosted by Madam Shen?" A girl wrapped in a big red fur cloak approached Yang Ruxin. "I’m Wei Yao, what’s your name? Are you familiar with the Shen family? How come I’ve never seen you here before?"
Yang Ruxin shook her head with a smile, "My name is Yang Ruxin, it’s my first time here."
"Oh." Wei Yao nodded. "Where’s your maid?"
"I’m just a village girl; I don’t have a maid," Yang Ruxin said with a smile.
"Oh," Wei Yao’s expression turned a bit strange. "Then you should’ve found a close friend or sister to come with you... at the very least to help you carry a change of clothes."
"Why is that?" Yang Ruxin frowned.
"Let me tell you." Wei Yao looked around, then leaned closer to Yang Ruxin. "At such banquets, those who attend are daughters from prominent families in the town or from nearby, and sometimes, if you accidentally offend someone, you might find someone sabotaging you. Getting splashed with water, or having soup spilled on you is the least of it. If you fall into a lake or something, then it’s really bad. Even if the host family is willing to provide you with clothes, what if someone plays a trick on you while you’re changing?"
Yang Ruxin couldn’t help but chuckle, "You know quite a bit, huh? Have you experienced it?"
"I haven’t experienced it myself, but I have seen such a thing happen. Back in Prefectural City, that Zhao family..." Wei Yao suddenly stopped mid-sentence and chuckled. "Being an illegitimate daughter, even if I attend such gatherings, I’m just there as an accessory..."
