After planting, Chen Lang and Meng Meng came over, each wearing a safety helmet made by Chen Shaonan and dressed in thick wind and rain-proof coats.
They had visited these few houses before; there weren’t any issues. They were just young and quite active. They took turns visiting these houses but weren’t a nuisance, they just talked in the living room and didn’t touch anything.
Gu Pan gave each of them a piece of chocolate. "Are the sweet potatoes planted at both your houses?"
Chen Lang nodded. "Yeah, I don’t know if they will taste good. If they were sweet potatoes, I would still like them."
Meng Meng added, "I love baked sweet potatoes the most. I remember having it once when I was little, it was sweet."
Her memories weren’t very clear; she was young back then, and it had been a long time ago.
Gu Pan patted Meng Meng’s hair. "These might not taste as good as the ones you had when you were little because this is a different variety. Normal plants need sunlight, air, water, and a long growing period. But these grow too fast because we need to fill our stomachs at the base, so they lose some nutrients and flavor."
This wasn’t to dishearten the children, but rather not to let their expectations be too high and end up disappointed, as previously, Lu Jianguo had told them that these were poor in taste, and just enough to satiate hunger with not much nutrition.
Now, explaining the principle to them, she also let them know these things weren’t just for taste but for survival.
Meng Meng nodded vaguely. "Dad said that there is not enough food at the base now. We are just drinking porridge at home and not eating solid food."
