Chapter 499: Ch Obsidian Wing strike group- 3
Stripped of all power, the ship’s inertial stabilizers failed. What remained of the hulking battlecruiser began to pitch downward and list aimlessly into the void, abandoning any survivors aboard to their grim, uncertain fates.
Although Varek and his squadron had successfully eliminated their primary target, their trouble was far from over—in fact, it had only just begun.
In response to the sinking of the battlecruiser, Republican command diverted a heavy strike group toward their position, while the surviving forces in the immediate perimeter launched an almost berserk counteroffensive.
A fresh wave of thirty starfighters launched from the dying cruiser, splitting into three ten-craft wings. Reinforcing them from behind came twenty void mechs, surging straight toward Varek’s vanguard interceptors, while ten fighters each peeled off to flank Samantha and Cathy’s squads.
"Hostiles incoming from dead ahead!" shouted a Bulwark pilot, banking hard as incoming fire shaved away a layer of his defenses.
[WARNING: Shield integrity down to 93 percent]
"Maintain formation!" Varek barked over the comms. "Execute evasive maneuvers and chew right through them!"
Rather than decelerating to screen the heavy Bulwarks, Varek led the four vanguard fighters into a steep dive directly into the approaching enemy formation.
Spearheading the charge, Varek unleashed sustained bursts from his dual plasma cannons, tracking both mechs and starfighters as he threw his craft into a high-speed barrel roll.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Blowing three starfighters to scrap and heavily damaging three mechs, he snapped the fighter out of the roll. He pulled into an extreme vertical climb, driving his sub-light engines near peak output before looping over the apex. Inverting his heading by 180 degrees, he dove straight back along his original flight path, his dual plasma cannons tracking the staggered hostiles and unleashing another punishing salvo.
BOOM! BOOM!
The concentrated barrage detonated the crippled mechs and claimed another three starfighters.
Seizing on the chaos their commander had carved out, the three trailing fighters pounced in unison. They pounded the disoriented Republican interceptors and mechs with coordinated fire, executing damaged targets and gutting the rest.
On the flanks, Samantha and Cathy refused to be outdone. Having neutralized the majority of their respective interceptor groups, they swung their wings back around to provide overlapping fire support.
Reconverging in full force, the squadron thoroughly wiped out the remaining Republican strike wing and their elite escort mechs. Yet the victory was not without cost: one of the interceptors and a vanguard fighter had their shield integrity shaved down by half, while the rest of the squadron sustained varying degrees of shield degradation.
Witnessing the lethal effectiveness of the human strike squadron—specifically the devastation wrought by the Obsidian Wing—the Republican sector command dispatched two additional heavy strike groups to turn the tide, determined to crush the Obsidian Wing before they could inflict any further damage.
By this time, the Obsidian Wing was already bearing down on its next target: a dedicated battlecarrier. Unlike their previous quarry, which was only a hybrid cruiser-carrier, this was a full-fledged frontline hangar platform heavily reinforced for direct fleet engagements.
Monitoring his tactical navigation array, Varek detected incoming hostiles closing fast from two forward vectors. They were staging a wide frontal pincer maneuver, sweeping in simultaneously from the forward port and forward starboard angles. Their trajectories formed a wide V converging straight on his formation.
"Stay sharp! Hostiles incoming from port and starboard flanks!" Varek warned immediately over the comms. "Forward port vector bearing zero-four-five, forward starboard vector bearing three-one-five. They’re converging directly on our intercept path."
Varek ordered the squadron to throttle back their forward thrust. Pushing straight ahead would trap them directly in the crosshairs of the converging pincer, cutting off their escape angles and boxing them in.
"Break formation and initiate defensive spread," Varek commanded, adapting to the tactical shift. "Samantha, take the left wing as usual. Cathy, the right wing is yours."
"Understood, Commander!" Samantha and Cathy acknowledged in unison.
"Bulwarks, hold the center core. Scythes, maintain vanguard escort with me."
"Copy that, Commander!" the heavy bomber and fighter pilots affirmed as the entire Obsidian Wing decoupled from its tight flight pattern and bled off forward speed.
Observing the deceleration, the commanders of the two Republican heavy squadrons pushed their thrusters to maximum burn, assuming the human formation was faltering or attempting to divert course. Blinded by the hunt, they failed to realize they had walked straight into a deliberate tactical posture.
Varek read their aggressive advance instantly and gave a grim nod. "Samantha, break left with your detachment—engage the port-side pincer!"
On cue, the left flank of the Obsidian Wing peeled off with sharp acceleration, streaking head-on toward the incoming hostiles at vector zero-four-five.
"Cathy, break right with your unit—intercept the starboard flank!"
Executing the mirror maneuver with flawless timing, the right flank snapped into high-G burns, cutting across the void to head off the Republican strike group closing from vector three-one-five.
Varek was not the kind of commander who would passively allow an enemy to envelop his squadron—not when he had anticipated their exact vector from the start.
The Obsidian Wing’s left and right flanks rocketed clean past the outer edges of the approaching Republican strike groups, catching the enemy pilots entirely flat-footed with their aggressive bypass.
Before the Republicans could reorient their targeting arrays, Varek unleashed the full firepower of the Scythes and Bulwarks held in the center. The corridor between the two formations erupted into violence as a relentless hail of plasma bolts and high-energy particle beams lanced through the void, slamming squarely into the Republican vanguard.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Caught completely off guard by the center-line barrage, the lead Republican craft detonated in rapid succession. Rather than getting bogged down in an extended dogfight, the human strike craft fully capitalized on their superior thrust-to-weight ratios, slicing cleanly through the enemy’s dispersed formation at blistering speed.
Having cleared the initial pass, Cathy hauled back on her flight controls, her three wingmen matching her trajectory in tight synchronization.
The four fighters arced over the top and dove steeply back into the disoriented Republican formation from above.
