Chapter 8: First Entry (1)
The first thing Lucen noticed was the sound.
There wasn't any.
No air hum. No echo. No wind through the pipes.
Just stillness.
Like the whole place was holding its breath.
He didn't move at first. Let his eyes adjust.
The space around him shimmered faintly. Color saturation was wrong. The green was too green. The air too still. He turned in place.
Trees.
Everywhere.
Not normal trees. These were twisted, vine-wrapped, massive things that looked like someone tried to breed a rainforest with a nightmare. The bark pulsed slightly. The canopy above blocked out everything except a weird blue haze that passed for sky.
He exhaled slowly.
