Grind to Greatness: The Barista System

Chapter 54 - 53 – Return Like Smoke

Jun returned to the plaza without ceremony.

No cart flare. No system ping. No new task.

Just the soft weight of the crate in his hands and the familiar uneven rhythm of the tiles beneath his soles.

The morning felt warmer than usual—not in temperature, but in presence. As if the air had taken a breath while he was gone and was now exhaling gently around him. The sounds of vendors opening cloth-covered trays and warming yesterday’s bread filled the space between buildings. No one looked directly at him. But they didn’t ignore him either.

A nod from the fruit vendor.

A glance from the woman who sold hand-oiled combs.

No questions.

Just room.

He set the crate down in his usual corner—not center, not tucked away. The edge where foot traffic curved but didn’t crowd. The brick beneath his feet was stained faintly from past pours. A dark crescent where the kettle had once tipped too far. Familiar.

He unfolded the daily cloth with calm hands. Creased it sharp, not for show, but for structure. The second cloth remained inside the crate. Folded. Still carrying yesterday’s breath.
