Chapter 40: Grandson In Law
Iris joined in, her eating briefly interrupted by her grandmother initiating a conversation about their morning plans — testing her driving skills, a plan that had been postponed.
"Alright, we’ll do that tomorrow, Grandma," Iris responded in a hushed tone, an inward sigh accompanying her words. Actually, she doesn’t need any tests. Her driving skills surpass most people holding driving licenses out there. She even has a license to drive heavy trucks, jet-engine airplanes, propeller airplanes, helicopters, and speedboats.
Xavier finally finished his breakfast and now turned his attention to Iris. He asked, "Interested in learning to drive?"
"Iris can drive, but she had a traumatic experience a year ago," Cassandra explained.
"Ah, I see," he replied. No wonder Granny Gray drives her to campus every morning.
Iris managed a wry smile toward Xavier. "Well, I want to drive again, but Grandma wants to ensure I’m okay by making me redo the driving test first. She’s worried my trauma might resurface when I’m driving alone," she explained, then downed her milk in a single gulp.
She looked at her grandmother before saying, "I have morning classes and should be back by the afternoon. You can test me later, Grandma."
"Iris, you don’t need to trouble Grandma with that. I can help," Xavier suddenly chimed in. With a serious expression, he turned to Cassandra. "Let me handle this, Granny Gray. I will ensure she can drive safely again."
"Really? Can you do that?" Cassandra’s eyes lit up hearing Xavier offer.
