Apocalypse Redux

Chapter 89: Interlude Crew

The training room was the same as it had always been.

Unadorned, cold, the ability to survive the goings-on within surpassing all other priorities.

And it was a place she’d hoped to never find herself inside again.

“What are the three ways of making sure you don’t waste your power pushing your enemy away?”

“Grapple them, go through them, or lay them on an anvil first,” Ye-in answered her mother’s question immediately. For what felt like the hundredth time. “And the only one I can rely on is the grapple.”

Because getting a suitable anvil could easily be hard in space and/or zero gravity, and she had the wrong build to rely on being able to outright ignore the issue by concentrating her force to the point where she’d never run into issues.

Everyone did, though. When people’s strength became absurd, and their weight stayed the same, punching an enemy to death suddenly became quite the math problem. And while that had been obvious from the start, something she’d been both aware of and prepared for … her mother had disagreed. And forced all this extra training on her, then doubled down when she’d learned what Ye-in’s third Evolution [Class] was.

[Starlit Raider] was, both in name and execution, a riff on the seaborn raiders of the truly ancient times, just adapted for space … and the title had certain implications. True ones, if one looked at her past, got drunk, jumped off a skyscraper and faceplanted on the ground until one was thoroughly concussed, and squinted real hard, it somewhat applied to her.

Blowing up an alien starship without even attempting to talk to it … a starship that had been about to start bombarding a human-inhabited world because it was an automated genocide machine.
