Chapter 132: Where I Was Meant to Be
Micah stood quietly at the doorway, his hand resting in the frame. His chest rose and fell slowly as he watched the scene in front of him. Darcy sat beside the hospital bed, adjusting carefully the blanket over his mother. Nora leaned on the edge of the bed, chatting away with a bright smile on her face. Flora, though pale and weak, was smiling too, eyes soft, filled with warmth and love.
The sight made Micah pause.
He could feel the affection between them, so real it was almost overwhelming. It was like a heavy stone that had been sitting on his chest finally rolled off. For the first time since knowing the truth, he could breathe without pain. His shoulders dropped a little, tension easing from his body.
Darcy had a loving mother. Micah’s eyes shifted to Flora. The lines of worry on her face, the way her eyes never strayed far from Darcy, the way she reached to touch his cheek, it was all so clear. She loved him deeply. Her care wasn’t fake or forced. It was genuine. Thank God. Darcy had grown up in a home full of love.
Micah’s fingers tightened around the bag as he stared at the woman on the bed.
He could see the resemblance with himself. From those hazel eyes to facial features. He hadn’t expected that. His breath caught. A lump formed in his throat and a stinging heat built behind his eyes. He didn’t know why... but he was sure. This woman would have accepted him as his own son. Even someone like him, arrogant, short-tempered, impulsive, and insensitive, she would have accepted.
In the novel, there was little interaction between Flora and Micah. Mostly because Micah had chosen to stay with Ramsy’s family, pushing Flora and Nora away, even hurting them. He had gone as far as stopping Flora from getting treatment and ignoring the cry of help from Nora in the Bar. That part always left Micah furious.
Why would he do such a thing?! Why had the book’s Micah been so cruel?
Now standing here, Micah realised something. His fear had always come from not knowing how Flora would react. But the moment he saw her, really saw her, something in his heart told him... she wouldn’t turn him away.
Then, he heard her voice. Weak but worried.
"But this is a private hospital... it must cost a fortune..."
