Arren was speechless for a moment as he stared at Spade’s playful smile. Everything had finally made sense to him. This pheromones... was the same as what he smelled in the car. He always thought he was having delusions because of his heat, as the beta’s smell suddenly became appealing to him, almost like that of an alpha.
While everything was hazy at the time, the smell of that pheromone was so strong that it had already registered in his mind. And the pheromones of that night resurfaced as soon as the dominant and musky scent of Spade’s pheromones invaded his nostrils and teasingly intertwined with his.
Arren had always wondered how Spade knew him and had assumed it was because of his case, and he had somehow caught his attention along the way. He knew how he avoided Spade and had never met him, so that’s what happened. He met him that night and was the one who saved him.
Arren was startled out of his thoughts by Spade’s deep voice, which had a coaxing undertone.
"Are you upset... that I didn’t tell you?" Arren’s eyes blinked and met Spade’s amber eyes right away. Arren pursed his lips as they locked eyes.
He wasn’t upset; it was just very unexpected. So the night he broke his vow was the night of his nightmare. Because his life took an unexpected turn, Spade was the one who saved him.
Arren shook his head but remained silent because more of his heart had suddenly experienced that overwhelming sensation. As a result, he was speechless, knowing how terrifying that night had been for him.
"Thank you," Arren expressed his heartfelt gratitude. Even a lump formed in his throat. He looked at Spade, and when he noticed how serious his face had become, he reached out his hand and wiped the corner of Arren’s eyes. He had no idea his eyes had moistened, but he couldn’t stop himself.
It was just... he was that grateful to Spade. If he wasn’t present... Arren closed his eyes unconsciously, forcing himself to stop remembering that night. Arren’s closed eyes immediately opened as he was taken aback when he was suddenly engulfed in an embrace. However, he did not resist and allowed himself to be engulfed in the hug.
Arren leaned into Spade’s chest as the alpha wrapped his arms tightly around him. He closed his eyes again as Spade’s natural scent and pheromones helped him relax. All of his thoughts about that night were washed away as Spade stroked his back and kissed the top of his head. He smiled, they were silent, and yet the atmosphere was especially soothing.
So, this was how to have an alpha to calm your emotions down. Arren had always thought that he didn’t need an alpha and be a slave of his gender, and he realized... having an alpha to become a partner was good too. Even more so if that alpha was Spade.
