Chapter 1638 - 1690: Terrifying Army Ants
At this moment, a sudden crash sound emanated from the airplane, breaking the silence of the woods and causing Xu Shanshan’s heart to suddenly accelerate. The unexpected noise made the already tense Xu Shanshan bite her lip.
On this crashed airplane, there weren’t just two skeletal remains; there were also six skeletal remains inside the cabin, all without exception, eerily white as if they had been painted with a layer of white paint. Under the sunlight, they seemed to glisten.
It’s normal for corpses to produce phosphorescence due to decomposition, but the fact that the bones, after decades of exposure to wind and sun, remained so white was strange. Especially in such a humid place, with rain almost every day, it’s peculiar how the bones remained this way after being drenched by the rain...
Li Yifei walked over and tapped one of the bones lightly with the knife in his hand. He found that the bone was still very hard, showing no signs of crumbling.
This was undoubtedly very strange. Li Yifei tested the other white bones and found them equally hard, as if they had undergone special treatment, maintaining their hardness without turning to mush despite decades of exposure to the elements.
Standing behind him, Xu Shanshan pointed at the bones and said, "Look, there are bite marks on these, with such small teeth..."
"Hmm, it seems these people encountered the same danger as those animals!" Li Yifei nodded and glanced around the arrangement inside the plane. He discovered several boxes of ammunition. He approached and used his knife to pry open one box. As the dust settled, inside lay a layer of bullets — machine gun bullets. However, after many years, these copper bullets had long since corroded. Li Yifei picked up one, looked at it for a moment, then tossed it back.
The other boxes were similar; the bullets or firearms inside had long been unusable, many disintegrating upon being picked up. Yet, those white bones were remarkably well-preserved.
That night, the two stayed in the airplane overnight. Although the cabin was damaged, there was still a section that could shield them from the wind and rain. It rained heavily throughout the night, and by the next morning, the rain still hadn’t stopped. The whole forest was flooded with water, with many creatures rushing around.
The heavy rain had made the rainforest swampy. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan didn’t risk advancing and continued to stay inside the crashed airplane. By then, Li Yifei had already cleared out the white bones, which had long been washed away by the rain to who knows where.
Occasionally, a few white bones floated over on the water surface, their animal origins unknown. These bones, without exception, were ghostly white, with small bite marks on them, as if they’d been nibbled by something.
Over the past two days, they had seen many white bones, seemingly every animal that died in this forest ended up like this.
If they hadn’t had urgent matters to attend to, staying there wouldn’t have been bad at all. Listening to the sound of rain, watching the flowing water, nestled in a sleeping bag next to Li Yifei would have been a kind of enjoyment.
This tranquility was shattered an hour after the rain stopped. The two had already packed their bags and were ready to continue deeper into the forest when they heard a commotion from the woods. They immediately stood up and looked in the direction of the sound. They first saw a leopard charging towards them. Li Yifei immediately raised his knife, ready to confront it, but the leopard also saw them, halted abruptly to avoid crashing into a tree, glanced at them, let out a growl, and veered off in another direction, continuing to run forward.
Hmm? Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan exchanged a glance. Li Yifei said, "There’s something else. Put on your backpacks, be careful."
As he spoke, several elephants also came charging out, targeting the two of them. These elephants, when running, were incredibly powerful, knocking down many small trees and shrubs along the way. They were covered in cuts and bleeding unlike the leopard, which avoided the two of them. The elephants charged directly at them. Li Yifei hurriedly pulled Xu Shanshan out of the plane, making way for these giant creatures.
One young elephant suddenly stumbled and fell, having stepped into a patch of mud. Due to its heavy weight, it was stuck and couldn’t climb out despite struggling, instead causing the muddy area to expand.
This was just the beginning. Some of the elephants rushed past, while others stopped and let out a few mournful cries at the young elephant. One appeared to be its mother and called out to it a few times before eventually turning around and running forward to catch up with the leading elephants.
In a short while, many more animals charged out of the forest.
"These animals... are fleeing for their lives!" Xu Shanshan’s voice had barely fallen when the forest shook, and the two finally saw the culprit causing the animals to panic and flee.
It was a mass, or rather, it should be called a large patch of blackness, moving swiftly and seemingly not slower than the fleeing animals.
"Army ants!" Li Yifei shouted the name of these terrifying creatures, but then he shook his head, saying, "No, I’ve seen army ants and killer ants before. These aren’t the same. These ants are bigger, much larger than army ants."
As the swarm got closer, the vanguard had already reached the two of them. These ants were over five centimeters long. Li Yifei had never seen such large ants in nature. These ants moved incredibly quickly, and anything they encountered along the way, they would swarm and bite, easily slicing insects and the like in half.
"Run, run that way, we can’t handle these things!" Li Yifei grabbed Xu Shanshan and turned around to run backward, chasing after the large animals that were rushing out.
Behind them, those supermassive army ants moved while making a rustling noise. Some slower-moving animals were also knocked down by them, and instantly countless army ants would swarm over them. With huge pincers clamping onto the animals’ flesh and powerful muscles pulling, they cut into these animals’ bodies. Some animals could struggle for a while, while others would be bitten to death in seconds.
It seemed only a few seconds or a minute or two passed, and a little wild boar, which had been thrashing particularly fiercely just now, was reduced to bones after the supermassive army ants crawled over it. Even the internal organs were bitten clean, bloodstains on the bones were sucked dry, and even the marrow inside seemed to have been extracted.
As for the little elephant trapped in the swamp, after wailing for dozens of seconds, it also fell silent. An uncountable number of army ants crawled onto its body and then hurriedly crawled away, with more army ants rushing up behind, opening their large mouths to bite into its body. So, not long after, the little elephant that had just been running also turned into a skeleton, with those bones even maintaining their original posture.
Li Yifei, while running, looked back a few times and, upon seeing the tragic state of the little elephant, finally understood how those bones that still maintained their original shape could be formed.
It was these terrifying army ants that caused it. Wherever these horrifying creatures passed, there wasn’t a single living thing...
A sharp pain shot through his arm, and Li Yifei lifted his clothing to see an army ant biting into his skin. He pinched the army ant, which actually tried to resist and wanted to raise its pincers to bite him.
After shaking off the army ant, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan paused briefly, having already run several hundred meters, even overtaking many animals. The two of them looked back and saw that the birds and beasts in the forest were alarmed, and those that couldn’t escape quickly would inevitably become food, all taking place in just a short time.
Li Yifei’s arm throbbed with pain, and looking down, he saw the spot where the army ant had bitten was now being corroded by some acidic substance, causing the wound to enlarge. This was the damage caused by just one army ant.
Xu Shanshan noticed it too, quickly grabbing his arm to help treat it. Li Yifei shook his head and said, "It’s nothing serious; this place is not safe either, we need to keep running. Who knows where these things suddenly appeared from!"
"But your arm..."
Li Yifei raised his hand, and with a flash of light, a dagger appeared. He made a cut on his arm, removing that piece of flesh, and used True Qi to stop the bleeding.
The two continued running further in, and in the time they’d delayed, those large ants had advanced another hundred meters. Even a little more delay and they would be caught up by those creatures.
So soon, an interesting scene emerged with Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan running among a group of animals that included leopards and wild boars. The leopard and wild boar ran side by side, and a monkey even rode on another wild boar, presenting an image of the senior brother riding on the junior brother.
These animals could easily kill dozens to hundreds of ants without effort, but now they were escaping for their lives, chased by these things. Mortal enemies huddled together, ironically harmonious.
This running persisted without knowing where the front was leading them. With the help of True Qi, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan weren’t too exhausted. After over half an hour of running, they finally stopped, while those animals had long lost the strength to run and lay on the ground as if resigned to their fate.
If they didn’t keep running and got caught by those army ants, they would inevitably become food, no doubt about it.
Their expressions were not looking good. Despite their high skills and being Innate Experts, they couldn’t withstand such an invasion by army ants. The power of nature was terrifying.
After waiting for another half hour, the rumbling and rustling sounds didn’t catch up. The animals that had fled frantically also stopped escaping. Li Yifei asked Xu Shanshan to wait in place, intending to go back and take a look, but Xu Shanshan disagreed, so they both chose to go back together for an inspection.
Returning the same way, they saw the leopard, exhausted from desperate running, lying limp on the ground, completely unable to move. With the leopard’s unique physique, even without those supermassive army ants catching up, it probably wouldn’t live much longer.
The same was true for the other animals, and Xu Shanshan couldn’t help but feel some pity for these poor creatures.
Continuing forward, they discovered that the massive army of ants had suddenly vanished, almost as if they had never appeared.
