The noisy detention cell suddenly fell silent. Nelson wasn't the only one surprised by the unexpected words—Koi, too, was flustered, his eyes wide with shock. But Nelson's reaction was even more extreme. His face turned pale, his mouth hung open, and he froze in place, looking completely stupefied as if blindsided by a situation he never saw coming. Maybe it was that reaction that fueled even more suspicion, because voices immediately started pouring in from all sides like they’d just been waiting for the cue.
“Right, didn’t you say you were his subordinate in high school? Getting us out of here should be nothing for you!”
“Call him. Hurry up!”
“Are we supposed to spend the night in here? Do something, quick. If Ashley Miller shows up and gets us out, we’ll believe every word you said.”
“Yeah, I’ll believe you too.”
“Same here.”
The mood was unanimous. It was like everyone sensed this was their chance to knock down Nelson’s bluff. They were all coming at him with the same energy, cornering him. There was no escape. All he could do was dart his eyes around nervously, scanning the room in a panic.
“...You guys are seriously...”
It took a while, but Nelson finally opened his mouth. He let out a bitter laugh, ran a hand through his hair, and shook his head slowly.
“You guys really don’t know how to wait, huh? Fine. Alright. I’ll try calling him.”
After glancing around at the others, Nelson sighed and added,
“But don’t get your hopes up. It might not be that easy to get out of here quickly.”
