His heart pounded in fear. It was the first time his father had called to him at this hour.
Usually, his father passed out drunk—or if not, he ignored Koi completely, pretending to sleep or heading off to work.
So why, all of a sudden?
Koi stood frozen, unable to speak. His father, sitting upright on the bed and watching him, finally opened his mouth. Koi had no idea what he was about to say. But then, without saying anything more, his father shut his mouth again. It was obvious he had something to say, yet he didn’t say it. Koi couldn’t take the tension.
“Um, I—I’m gonna be late... I’ll be going now!”
He blurted the words and bolted from the motorhome, stumbling with a loud clatter. His father watched silently as his son ran off.
Haa, haa.
Koi ran until he was a good distance away, then stopped and turned to look back. The area was quiet. His father hadn’t followed.
Relieved, Koi let out a shaky breath.
What was he going to say?
He was curious for a moment, but if someone had told him to go back and wait for his father to speak, he would’ve refused without hesitation.
After watching the still motorhome for a while, Koi turned away. As he began walking toward school, his phone suddenly rang. Surprised at receiving a call this early, he checked the caller ID—and instantly, his face lit up.
