Suddenly, Koi snapped out of it. His heart, which had been fluttering in excitement just moments before, now raced for a completely different reason. He tried to jerk back in surprise, but Ashley still had him by the arm, so he only flinched in place.
“I—I smell?”
He stammered as he looked up at Ashley. Ashley responded as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Of course.”
Then, just as casually, he added,
“You smell like Koi.”
“You mean... I smell?”
Koi’s voice shot up in alarm. Again, Ashley nodded without hesitation.
“Yeah.”
Panicked, Koi quickly asked,
“Uh—like what?”
He tensed, bracing himself, while Ashley paused to think. “Hmm,” he murmured, then answered,
