Arthur studied the woman with predatory interest. Mid-thirties, magically enhanced reflexes, and a mind sharp enough to serve as personal representative for a ruler who had claimed power through ruthless elimination of rivals.
"How thoughtful of the Emperor," Arthur replied. "I trust she’s well?"
"Very well, Your Majesty. In fact, she expressed particular interest in... recent developments in your kingdom. The reports of your enhanced capabilities have reached even our distant borders."
"Have they?" Arthur’s smile was all teeth. "How interesting that the Emperor takes such personal interest in the internal affairs of other kingdoms."
Lady Ashworth’s composure never wavered, but Arthur could sense the tension beneath her diplomatic facade. "Emperor Lyralei believes in staying informed about... significant changes in the continental balance of power."
"Then you may inform her that Lyranth’s position has indeed become significantly stronger," Arthur said, letting a hint of his enhanced presence leak through his words. "I trust she’ll find that information... educational."
The Imperial spy inclined her head respectfully, but Arthur could see the calculation in her eyes. She’d come to assess a potential threat and found something far more dangerous than expected.
