Chapter 2: The hunger beneath
The shadow loomed.
Its presence swallowed the golden light I had just begun to savor, its edges jagged, curling like grasping fingers.
It wasn't the gentle shade of a passing cloud, nor the harmless flicker of a swaying branch. No, this thing was solid, unmoving. Watching.
A predator!
The realization sent a surge as panic spiked through me. I had no lungs to heave, no heart to pound in terror, but every fiber of my being screamed... move! Escape! Do something!
But I couldn't.
I had no legs to flee. No arms to fight back. I was trapped in place, a helpless sprout in an unforgiving world.
Then, just as despair took root...
