William, the Head of the Adventurer’s Association, looked at Klaus with a solemn expression, his earlier amusement completely gone.
The gravity of the situation, and the profound truth he was about to reveal, weighed heavily on him.
He had just explained humanity’s true predicament, being viewed as "livestock" by the alien Watchers, and the widespread corruption among the Legacy Families.
Now, he was about to deliver a truth which was very personal to him and that would strike Klaus at his very core.
"Klaus," William began
"the disappearance of villages, the influx of orphans, the reports of human sacrifices you just read about in those old newspapers... your parents, Klaus, were not merely poor.
They were victims. They, along with thousands of others, were offered up in dark, unspeakable rituals to alien races.
This was done in exchange for power, for blessings that would manifest as powerful abilities in their children and the next generation of certain Legacy Families."
Klaus’s hands, which had just moments ago been holding the newspapers, clenched into tight fists, crumpling the brittle, yellowed paper.
His breath hitched in his throat. The words hit him with the force of a physical blow, far more devastating than any monster’s attack.
Sacrificed to demons.
