It had been years since that day in the university. Years since Jean looked at Logan... overweight, underdressed, and poor... with eyes filled with nothing but disgust. Her rejection still sat heavy in his gut like undigested rage.

The house was quiet, but Jean’s thoughts weren’t. She sat curled on the couch, arms wrapped tightly around a cushion as if it could shield her from memories that clawed at her insides. The sunlight pouring through the windows did nothing to chase away the lingering shadows inside her chest.
Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. A message from Emma... "I’m coming over. You can’t ignore me forever."
A small groan escaped her lips, but part of her was relieved.
