Chapter 37: New shop
"Old woman! How many times have I told you not to give away meals for free?" A fat woman lashed out at Margaret Whitmore. "Do you think we're running a charity house?"
Jazmine Harrison put down her chopsticks.
It seemed there was always someone determined to spoil her peaceful moments.
Margaret looked embarrassed. "I keep track of what I give away. If I ever serve a free meal, I let you cut it from my salary."
"You think that's enough?" Ms. Winslow sneered. "Because of you, this place is flooded with penniless beggars! You're ruining my business! Get rid of that girl right now, or you're fired!"
Margaret paled.
"Madam Winslow, I won't give free meals anymore. But the girl is a customer. We shouldn't treat her badly—it would hurt the shop's reputation."
"Shut up, you wretched woman! Do as I say or pack your things and get out!"
"Enough!" Jazmine's voice rang out, sharp and cold.
The entire shop fell silent.
The fat woman sneered at her. "Mind your tone, girl. You're standing in my shop. Either pay for your soup or get the hell out!"
