Chapter 386: Pray
At Lancaster Mansion
"This is too sudden," Vernice muttered, pacing the living room. Turning to Rock, she asked, "When are we going to visit? Arlan needs us. Can we go now?"
She glanced at her watch before continuing, "We have your chemotherapy session coming up. Maybe we should drop by afterward?" Her voice was calm, but her concern was evident.
Rock simply nodded while staring at Vernice. Lately, Vernice had taken charge of everything, even his schedule. He appreciated her support, but guilt lingered; she was doing so much, and he felt like a burden.
"He must be devastated right now. Arlan loved Summer so much," Vernice said, her expression softening with worry. "But what I don’t understand is how Summer suddenly fell into a coma. She didn’t have an accident, and she’s always been healthy. We even went to our annual health check-ups together!"
Rock stood up decisively. "Let’s go now instead."
"Are you sure?" Vernice asked, surprised.
"Yes. My chemo is in the same hospital. It’s better to check on Arlan now rather than wait for William’s update," he replied. "I thought too many visitors might overwhelm him, but having us there might help. Besides, William, James, and Darwin are already with him."
Vernice grabbed his hand, and they walked to the door together. Rock’s gaze dropped to their intertwined fingers. He couldn’t recall when he had started letting Vernice take the lead in everything, but it felt oddly comforting.
