Falling for my Enemy's Brother

Chapter 8: The Space between us

Merlina’s POV

’Unless, you have a thing for danger.’

Craig’s words hung in the air, thick with something I couldn’t quite place. His voice was low, a dangerous edge to it, and for a second, I wasn’t sure if he was still talking to me—or if he was talking to himself.

I didn’t know how to answer. I didn’t even know how to breathe.

He was close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off him, could see the way his eyes searched mine, as if he was trying to read me, trying to figure out what I was thinking. But I wasn’t thinking. Not really.

I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. It was like the air had been stolen from my lungs, leaving me breathless and off balance. I wasn’t prepared for this. Not this pull, this tension. Not the way he made me feel like everything I’d been trying to avoid was standing right in front of me.

For a moment, it felt like gravity was pulling us together — like something inevitable.

We were balanced on the edge of something, and I couldn’t tell if I wanted to fall or flee.

Then his phone buzzed, sharp and sudden, breaking the spell.

Craig stepped back, the moment shattering. He fumbled for his phone, and something flickered in his eyes as he glanced at the screen.

"Adriana," he muttered under his breath.
