Li Mei lay fast asleep on the far side of the large, silk-draped bed.
Between her and her husband, Hei Zhòu, rested a long body pillow—a silent barrier marking the space that had grown between them.
Now, the room was quiet, but the silence was far from peaceful.
Earlier, they had argued.
Hei Zhòu had tried—truly tried—to speak to her in private, to ask why she had dismissed and humiliated him so casually in front of everyone.
He had expected anger, maybe even a sharp exchange.
But what he received instead had cut deeper: indifference.
Li Mei hadn't even looked at him.
She had scoffed, dismissed his concerns without a second thought, and walked away without offering a single word of apology.
As if his feelings didn't matter.
