A Good Country Wife

The young scholar looked at her with a complex expression, a mix of pain and struggle. Lin Yue felt curious and wanted to ask for clarity, but as the young man saw Zhao Erhu approaching from a distance, he ran off in a panic.

Lin Yue found his manner and the change in his complexion quite strange. It was obvious that he knew her, but he ran off when he saw Zhao Erhu, which meant he was afraid of Zhao Erhu finding out. She had heard that before she came to the Li Family, the original owner of her body had run away from home. Could it be that this young man was the original Lin Yue’s secret admirer? Yikes! If that were true, it would be way too dramatic. She really didn’t want Zhao Erhu to stage some kind of adulterer-catching scene.

"Niuniu, what’s wrong? What are you looking at?" Zhao Erhu came over from a distance, and since he didn’t see the young scholar, he only noticed Lin Yue staring in a certain direction with a puzzled expression. He looked there and saw nothing, wondering what had gotten into her, hoping she hadn’t been bewitched by something unclean.

"It’s nothing. I just saw a young scholar following me. He looked like he recognized me, but he ran off as soon as he saw you coming. It’s very strange. Could it be that I know him?"

Lin Yue wasn’t sure if Zhao Erhu had actually seen the young scholar. Hearing Zhao Erhu’s question, she spoke with some confusion on her face, clearly showing suspicion and curiosity. Secretly, though, she was observing Zhao Erhu’s reaction. It was better to be frank about these things than to hide them. After all, she hadn’t done anything wrong. If anyone was to blame, it would be the previous Lin Yue, and that had nothing to do with her, especially now that she "couldn’t remember" anything from before. Zhao Erhu couldn’t blame her for this.

"What? You said a young scholar was following you?" Zhao Erhu’s eyes narrowed slightly, a sharp light flashed in them, and a hint of danger emanated from him. This was not acceptable, some strange man following his wife, and a young scholar at that. Could he be harboring designs on his wife?

Lin Yue pretended not to notice the change in Zhao Erhu, continuing, "I didn’t notice it at first, thinking he was just a passerby. We haven’t seen him in our village, so I didn’t pay much attention. But then he kept following me, and I found that strange. I wanted to ask him who he was and why he was following me, but before I could speak, he ran off as soon as he saw you coming from a distance. You really came at just the right time."

There was a hint of complaint in Lin Yue’s words, clearly annoyed by Zhao Erhu’s sudden arrival, which had prevented her from discovering the truth. Her pretty little mouth pouted, making her look extra adorable.
