In the inner residence of Hundred Lotus Manor, Nian Nian performed a simple ceremony to formally recognize Li Yuan as her godfather. Nervously clutching a teacup, she knelt and offered it to him in her soft, childish voice. “Godfather, please drink tea.”
Li Yuan accepted the cup, took a sip, and set it on the table. He helped Nian Nian to her feet and ruffled her hair, then pointed to Yan Yu’s and Xue Ning’s slightly rounded bellies.
“By this time next year,” he said with a smile, “you’ll be a big sister.”
The little girl remained a bit tense, standing there shyly with a small grin.
Yan Yu beckoned her over. “What’s this? Your godfather gets tea, but your godmothers don’t?”
Flustered, Nian Nian hurried to offer them each a cup.
Afterward, Yan Yu pulled her close and let Nian Nian place a hand on her belly. “We’ll all get along, won’t we?”
With curiosity in her eyes, Nian Nian gave it a gentle pat. “Godmother, your stomach isn’t very big yet.”
Yan Yu laughed. “It’s still early.”
“Can the baby hear me?” Nian Nian asked.
“Give it a few more months,” Yan Yu said. “Then come feel again.”
