"Mom, whose real mother are you? You’re so blatantly biased it’s unbearable." Ye Man pouted grievously.
"Ungrateful child, even if I am biased, it’s for your own good." Ye Man’s mother reached to smack her hand out of habit but caught herself halfway and stopped.
"You always say that." Ye Man muttered under her breath, her face etched with silent resentment.
"You’ll understand once you have your own baby." Her mother chuckled as she glanced at her, and then looked around the room. "Your father and I discussed it, we can’t manage to renovate the house in time, but changing all the furniture isn’t too difficult, especially since everything in your room is so old. The furniture designs are also outdated. It really won’t look good when people come to pick up the bride. Do you want to pick out the furniture together, or shall your father and I decide alone?"
"You two pick it out," Ye Man said indifferently. After all, she wasn’t likely to live at her parents’ house much longer, so naturally, the furniture should be chosen to their own liking.
"Alright, your father and I will go to the furniture mall tomorrow to have a look." Ye Man’s mother’s attention was suddenly drawn to a delicately carved rectangular box with interlocking floral patterns and a lock, sitting atop Ye Man’s dressing table.
"Is this from Gu Feng? It looks really nice, what’s inside?"
Ye Man’s mother instinctively picked up the box to examine it more closely, her face brimming with curiosity, "Is there a key?"
Ye Man nonchalantly retrieved a tiny metal box, pressed a button, and the metal box sprung open to reveal the key inside. She handed the key to her mother: "I haven’t looked yet. I don’t know what’s inside either, you check for yourself."
The moment Ye Man’s mother saw that even the key was intricately made of brass, carved with the same floral pattern, she remarked.
