Chapter 316 - 324 James Clark’s Thoughts
James Clark has been living quite the high life these days. Previously just a minor employee at the head office, he is now the general manager of a branch company, with total assets nearing one hundred million, and two to three hundred subordinates. Everyone in the company has to act according to his mood; as soon as his face darkens, there is no one who isn’t afraid.
The original general manager, Gina Lopez, only drove a Buick, but he has now switched to a BMW X5. For such a large company, a general manager has to drive a car of this caliber to match the position.
Money, power, status—James Clark seems to have it all at once. For a man, that is indeed very impressive. This is social status, what he has always pursued, and now he finally has it in his hands.
However, James Clark’s life is somewhat bittersweet. Although everyone outwardly shows him great respect as the CEO, flattering him, behind his back they all say he climbed to this position through a woman’s connections. A few times, he even overheard his employees discussing this, their disdainful and contemptuous expressions apparent.
This is James Clark’s Achilles’ heel, a thorn in his side. While it’s true, he climbed to this position through Mary Johnson, the fact that others say it that way is something he can’t stand.
What’s making James Clark increasingly uncomfortable is his current wife, Mary Johnson. This woman is simply a shrew. At home, her word is law—she bosses him around, and she’s just the same at the company. Her temper flares up whenever she says so, not giving him, the general manager, any face at all.
People are like this: when they have not yet obtained something, they will do everything possible to get it. But once they have what they wanted, their thoughts turn to the things they’ve lost. Lately, James Clark misses Sunny Nguyen terribly. He thinks of how Sunny used to be toward him and looks at how Mary is now, making him feel more and more how good Sunny was and how unbearable a woman Mary is.
If possible, James Clark really wants to get back together with Sunny and kick the annoying Mary out of his life.
When Sunny calls asking for the household registration booklet to transfer her hukou, it evokes James Clark’s memory of how happy they were when they initially settled their hukou together, making him miss Sunny even more.
Originally, James Clark was planning to meet with Sunny alone. This way, he could have a good talk with her. He wanted to tell Sunny that their separation was a reluctant decision, meant to lay a foundation for their future. He wished for Sunny’s forgiveness. He doesn’t believe Sunny could have forgotten him by now, considering how loving they were when they were together.
He had it all planned out: he would play along with Mary for now, and once he made enough money here, he would kick her out. Then he could get back together with Sunny. For now, Sunny could be his mistress. Since they had been married, Sunny probably wouldn’t say no to him.
