Chapter 103 My Backer is Officer Monaghan
James Brown, though still nursing some wounds on his leg, would have easily taken care of these henchmen. However, glancing at a distance, Helen Wilson was walking towards him. He immediately started to clumsily dodge and shout, "Help! Help!"
Helen Wilson’s past few days had been somewhat indescribable. It seemed like she should be happy, as she was now the deputy director and no longer just a beat cop. To become a deputy director so soon after starting her job was rare in the entire system, to the point that it might make others think she was the offspring of an official.
Yet, she could not muster happiness. Becoming deputy director had exposed her to things she had previously been unaware of, things she found intolerable, and even some matters she believed were unbefitting for a police officer to be involved in.
The main issue was that she felt she shouldn’t have become deputy director. It wasn’t due to her own abilities but rather because of the assistance of that mysterious man that she had been credited with achievements.
Today, the owner of a casino resort had invited her to dinner. She didn’t want to go, but since Director Lewis was attending and had specifically requested her presence, she begrudgingly went. And that meal was even more unpleasant for her. She had heard rumors of the casino resort owner’s involvement with the underworld. If even she was aware of it, how could Director Lewis not know? Yet, the director was treating the man like a brother, as if they were so close that they could wear the same pair of trousers.
Though Helen Wilson was a police officer with a strong sense of justice, she knew that with her experience and current capabilities, it was impossible for her to do anything about the casino owner. Also, having just been promoted to deputy director, it would be unwise to get on Director Lewis’s bad side, making it difficult for her to continue working there. She had no choice but to play along and have dinner with them, though it left her feeling incredibly frustrated inside.
Feeling depressed on her way home, she suddenly heard someone calling for help. She immediately sprinted towards the sound and saw several people beating a man. She called out loudly, "Stop, I am a police officer!"
The title of police officer still carried weight. The men surrounding James Brown all instinctively stopped when Helen Wilson shouted at them.
"Officer Wilson, Officer Wilson, save me!" James Brown quickly rushed over and grabbed Helen Wilson’s arm, hiding behind her.
Helen Wilson then recognized that it was James Brown. She didn’t have a great impression of him, but after overdrinking the previous night and ending up at his home—where he didn’t take advantage of her—she couldn’t help but see him in a different light. Besides, even without considering their relationship, the sight of these men ganging up on one person was something she couldn’t just ignore.
Seeing that Helen Wilson was not in uniform and was a woman, the henchmen didn’t immediately run away. After exchanging glances, they directly charged towards both James Brown and Helen Wilson again.
