Walking hands in hands with Lucius in the beautiful cobblestone walkway was Layla’s all time favorite activity.
"I have come here once with my mother," Lucius suddenly said. The two of them slowly stopped before sitting at the edge of the lake on a stony surface. "That’s the only time she has ever taken me out with her."
"When did you come here with your mom?" Layla questioned, looking at his side face.
"When I was eleven. It was my birthday and she wanted to make it special," Lucius stated. "But I know why she brought me here," he whispered and turning his head to face Layla.
"Why?"
"Antoine told Mom. I was whining before my brother for not going anywhere with my mother. I don’t know why I am telling you this, but I felt I should," Lucius said, feeling conflicted.
Layla moved closer, resting her chin on his shoulder. "You miss your brother," she said softly, her words more an observation than a question. "I can tell. When you start enjoying life, you always come back to this place—to the past, to the things that happened. And it keeps you from finding peace."
Lucius’s jaw tightened, and he gave a slight nod. Her words struck a chord in the depth of his heart, which he couldn’t deny.
"I’m sorry," he murmured, his eyes lowering to the ground. "I wanted this small vacation to be for us, something just for us."
Layla reached for his hand, entwining her fingers with his. "It is for us, Lucius," she said. "And sharing your thoughts, your feelings... that’s part of it too. You don’t have to apologize for being human. I’m enjoying every small moment with you."
