Lucius sank into the plush mattress with a contented sigh, his body finally surrendering to the day’s fatigue. "Ah, I feel so tired now," he murmured, shifting slightly before resting his head in Layla’s lap.
She sat gracefully beside him, her fingers instinctively threading through his hair in soothing strokes.
"Did you enjoy spending time with your father and nephew?" Layla asked softly, her voice carrying a warm note of curiosity.
Lucius closed his eyes, letting the comfort of the moment envelop him. "I did," he replied, his lips curving into a small smile. "Your suggestion for this trip was nothing short of perfect. It gave me a chance to bond with them in ways I hadn’t imagined. I feel... lighter, somehow."
"I’m glad," she whispered, her fingers threading in his hair. "Close your eyes," she then urged.
Lucius quirked a brow, a playful glint in his eyes. "Are you going to sing me a lullaby?" he teased.
A faint smile tugged at her lips. "I don’t know any lullabies," she admitted. Her expression grew contemplative as she continued, "I had a heartfelt conversation with Sister Fiona earlier. She shared so much about her past. Her greatest wish is for her son to make a name for himself. It broke her heart when Roderick wasn’t chosen as chairman."
Lucius opened his eyes, meeting hers with a probing gaze. "Are you thinking of stepping down and giving the position to Roderick eventually?" he asked with curiosity.
Layla didn’t respond immediately, her silence heavy with inner turmoil. Her fingers paused mid-stroke in his hair, and her gaze drifted away, caught somewhere between duty and compassion.
