The next day, in the house party for Alekis’s birthday celebration after cake cutting, he introduced both Lucius and Layla to some of his old friends, who couldn’t attend their wedding reception.
As the lively gathering progressed, Mr. Leinster, a distinguished guest, approached the couple. With a warm smile, he remarked, "I happen to know your daughter-in-law through a project my daughter is quite invested in. I must say, Lucius, you’ve made an excellent choice. Though you married later than most, you’ve truly found the perfect partner."
Lucius responded with a gracious smile. "Thank you for your kind words. They mean a lot to us."
Just then, Roger appeared by Lucius’s side, leaning in to whisper something urgent. Lucius nodded slightly and then turned to the group. "If you’ll excuse us for a moment," he said politely before guiding Layla away.
As they moved through the crowd, Layla leaned closer, curiosity evident in her tone. "What’s going on?"
Lucius glanced at her, his voice calm but carrying significance. "Your parents have just arrived."
Layla quickly composed herself, smoothing her elegant dress. Her hand instinctively tightened around Lucius’s arm, seeking quiet support.
"I still feel awkward around them," Layla murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as they approached the entrance.
Lucius gently placed his hand over hers on his arm, offering a reassuring squeeze. "Just be yourself. You’ll be fine," he said softly, his calm tone steadying her nerves.
