Chapter 225: Stealing kisses from your husband
"Layla, what a surprise to see you in the kitchen," Fiona remarked with mild disbelief. "We have chefs and maids to handle these things."
Layla glanced over her shoulder, her hands skillfully chopping vegetables. "I thought I’d prepare dinner tonight," she replied warmly.
Fiona arched an elegant brow, her voice carrying a note of disapproval. "You’re the daughter-in-law of the De Salvo family, Layla. Such tasks are hardly fitting for someone of your stature."
Layla turned to face Fiona, her smile polite but unwavering. "To me, cooking isn’t just a task or chore—it’s a way to relieve my stress and I truly enjoy it. I appreciate your concern, but I promise, this is one thing I don’t mind doing." Her tone was gentle, making it clear she wouldn’t be deterred.
"Okay!" Fiona didn’t press her further. "Take the help of the maids where it’s necessary," she suggested before walking away.
Layla simply smiled at Fiona’s retreating figure and returned to her work. As she poured oil into the pan, sizzling it with the veggies she had chopped.
Moments later, Roderick strode into the room, his irritation evident. "What are you people even paid for? Can’t you manage to keep a filled water jar in my room?" he barked in his impatient and harsh tone.
But his sharp demeanor faltered the instant he saw Layla standing by the stove. His brow furrowed in surprise, and his voice softened as his eyes fixed on her. "Layla? Why are you cooking?" he asked, the annoyance in his tone replaced with mild concern.
"You can take the water from the fridge and leave," Layla replied curtly, deliberately ignoring his question.
