Chapter 153: Meet Doctor Edward
The next morning, Layla dialed her father-in-law’s number, her heart pounding as she waited for him to answer. After a few rings, his familiar voice came through, warm and steady.
"Good morning, Layla," Alekis greeted her, a hint of curiosity in his tone. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this early call from my daughter-in-law?"
"Good morning, Father," Layla replied, keeping her voice composed. "I was hoping we could meet today."
Alekis chuckled softly. "Layla, you’re always welcome at the house. There’s no need for formalities or advance notice."
Layla hesitated for a moment before speaking again, her tone more serious. "I appreciate that, Father, but this isn’t a casual visit. There’s something important I need to discuss with you—privately."
Alekis paused, sensing the weight behind her words. "I see," he said, his tone shifting to one of quiet concern. "Very well. Let’s arrange a time and place. Is everything all right?"
"We’ll talk when we meet," Layla responded gently. "Thank you, Father."
"I’ll send you the name of the restaurant where we can meet," Alekis said firmly.
"Sure, Father," Layla replied before ending the call. She put her phone down and quietly stepped back into the bedroom, closing the balcony door behind her. Lucius remained in a deep sleep, his face peaceful yet shadowed by the weight of his burdens. Not wanting to disturb him, Layla decided to let him rest a while longer.
